Built From a Breakdown
How a beat-up car and a stubborn idea led to America’s most trusted multi-tool
Ingenuity | 4 Minutes
Every tool begins as a problem
that refuses to stay unsolved.
It Started With a Broken Car
In the late 1970s, an American traveler named Tim Leatherman was driving through Europe in a small, unreliable Fiat.
The car broke down constantly.
When it did, Tim reached into his pocket for the only tool he had: a simple pocketknife. It wasn’t enough. He needed pliers. A screwdriver. Something sturdier — something that could handle real mechanical problems on the side of the road.
That frustration planted a question that wouldn’t let go:
Why wasn’t there a compact tool that could do all of this?

An Idea That Refused to Go Away
Back home in the United States, Tim couldn’t shake the thought. He had no formal background in tool manufacturing. What he did have was patience, mechanical curiosity, and a willingness to fail.
In his garage, he began sketching and prototyping. Early versions were bulky, awkward, and unreliable. Folding pliers weren’t easy to engineer. Every improvement introduced new problems.
For years, the idea went nowhere.
Manufacturers rejected it. Investors weren’t interested. Friends questioned whether the concept made sense at all. Pocketknives already existed. Toolboxes already existed. Why combine them?
Tim kept going anyway.
